The Art of Education: My Journey to Creating Gabriel’s Art Kids
Ten years ago, I embarked on a journey to create a school that was more than just a place of learning; it was a space where creativity and passion for the arts could flourish. Gabriel’s Art Kids, encompassing our early childhood program and the After School Art Program (ASAP), was born out of a vision to integrate arts into education in a meaningful way. As we celebrate a decade of growth, I reflect on the path that brought me here and the challenges and triumphs along the way.
The Genesis of Gabriel’s Art Kids
After graduating with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in NYC and a MS in Art Education from Syracuse University, I saw firsthand the devastating effects of budget cuts on art programs in schools. As an admissions counselor and academic advisor, I witnessed talented students being denied opportunities due to financial constraints and lack of resources. This deeply troubled me and ignited a determination to create a space where art education was accessible and valued.
In 2012, I opened Gabriel’s Art Kids with the mantra, “If I build it, they will come.” Starting with just nine after-school students and six preschoolers, the community’s response was overwhelmingly positive. By listening to what parents and students needed, we grew exponentially, creating a nurturing environment for young artists.
Weathering the Storm
The last few years have been particularly challenging due to the pandemic. Schools and essential establishments faced unprecedented changes, and we were no exception. After months of uncertainty and pivoting, we began to see a return to normalcy. Classes were filling up, and I was able to hire dedicated, passionate teachers once again.
However, just as we were regaining our footing, we faced a new challenge. The local public schools expanded their “Promise K” program, initially meant for low-income families, to a full-year program. Many families chose the “free” option, leading to a sudden drop in our enrollment. This unexpected change forced us to make difficult decisions about staffing and budgets.
Despite these setbacks, my team and I remained resilient. Our enrollment coordinator worked tirelessly to bring in new families, and within weeks, we not only recovered but exceeded our previous enrollment numbers. This reaffirmed my belief in the value of our unique approach to education.
The Importance of Arts in Education
Why is arts education so vital? It’s not just about creating art but fostering critical thinking, empathy, and self-expression. Our programs at Gabriel’s Art Kids are designed to develop well-rounded individuals who think creatively and approach problems with innovative solutions. The arts provide a different lens through which students can view the world, helping them to become more adaptable and resilient.

I have seen firsthand the transformative power of art. Students who struggle in traditional academic settings often thrive in our programs. For instance, a fourth grader with advanced math and reading skills but needing to move to think clearly found a home with us. Public schools often fail to accommodate such unique learning needs, but we embrace and support them.
The Journey Ahead
As we move forward, I want to highlight the dedication and passion that goes into running an arts-based school. It’s not just about providing a service but creating a community. Our teachers are talented and committed individuals who genuinely care for our students. We face challenges, from rising costs to external pressures, but our commitment to quality education remains steadfast.
Running Gabriel’s Art Kids has taught me the importance of flexibility, empathy, and perseverance. I’ve learned to navigate financial challenges, advocate for arts education, and build a supportive community. Despite the hurdles, the joy of seeing students grow, learn, and express themselves makes it all worthwhile.
My journey in arts education is deeply personal and driven by a passion for making a difference. Gabriel’s Art Kids is more than a school; it’s a testament to the power of creativity and community. This summer we will celebrate 12 years of serving our community. I look forward to continuing this journey, inspiring young minds, and fostering a love for the arts in every student who walks through our doors.
